President Obama admitted on Thursday that he is unable to keep his campaign promise of bringing all military personnel home from Afghanistan.
“While America’s combat mission in Afghanistan may be over, our commitment to Afghanistan and its people endures,” Obama stated in the Roosevelt Room. “As commander in chief, I will not allow Afghanistan to be used as a safe haven for terrorists to attack our nation again.”
Approximately 5,500 U.S. military personnel are now set to remain in Afghanistan through 2016, which is five times the number of troops previously set to remain in the region. Before the announcement, 1,000 troops were expected to remain in the country.
