Recently Senator Ted Cruz announced that he will soon access the ACA for his family’s medical coverage. He stated, “It’s better than nothing.”
Pretty much everyone has an opinion on why Cruz chose to do this. Some are calling him hypocritical for using this source in light of his promise that, if elected to the presidency, he would immediately repeal the entire healthcare law. I have the opposite reaction.
This man is a Saint! He is willing to place his closest loved ones in the same precarious position that millions of Americans find themselves forced into, that is being dependent on the government for healthcare.
The Cruz family has been fully insured through Mrs. Cruz’s employment at Goldman Sachs. That coverage will be lost when she takes a leave of absence to assist in Ted’s run for the presidency. The Cruz’s have numerous options for quality medical coverage through private insurance companies, affordable on Ted’s salary as a Senator. And yet, they have decided to be an example to the nation. This is a dangerous choice. But running for President of the United States is too!
Relying on the government for healthcare is very close to having no insurance at all. No doubt the Cruz family will pay the highest possible premiums, be placed in a category with enormous deductions, and possibly lose access to their prefered doctors. Very arguably, the family would have more freedom, and likely spend less, if they were permitted to “self-insure”…which would be contrary to Obama’s mandate and punishable by a fine in America today!
In light of these facts, I’m not so sure Ted Cruz was correct when he stated the ACA was “better than nothing.” New evidence is suggesting that “nothing” may actually be better and more affordable than Obamacare!
“To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me. Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame…” (Psalm 25:1-3/ESV)
